Hoop Makers

Been having a ton of fun touring the school holiday programs around Melbourne teaching kids how to make and decorate professional hula hoops. They have been crafting the most dazzling rings to use for their own hoop practice.

The best part is when they get to show off their fabulous hoop moves.

Beach Hooping Down Under

Had the special pleasure of meeting up with some super hoop stars from Tokyo, you may remember them from the Hoop Stars in Tokyo video, while they were holidaying in Melbourne. We couldn’t resist a seaside hoop up…

Thanks Emma and Jamie for a ton of fun at St Kilda!

Into the Light

This year has been full of huge changes. Through them all I have felt grateful for the gift of movement and the hoops, keeping my hooping practice alive has helped me through many of the shifts and growth. Out of it all came this more serious hoop piece, it signifies an evolution in my practice and maturity in my skills. No longer shying away from some moves that I felt a lack of confidence with. A choreographed piece took me away from the freestyle element I often use in performance and put my focus on the musicality, expansion and balance of a piece. I have enjoyed creating Into the Light, a movement story about stepping out of the darkness and into the light.

She Rocked and Rolled and Hooped!

Just back from the much anticipated Exotica starring and crafted by the one and only Marawa the Amazing. We have been popping into as many shows as we can during the Melbourne Fringe Festival and Melbourne Circus Festival but I have to say this was the one I was not-so-secretly most excited about. Having watched so much of Marawa’s spinning on my small laptop screen, seemed too good to be true that I would be in the seeing her do her stuff in the flesh.

Marawa the Amazing

Being on NICA turf even felt special. Walking through the campus I think I mentioned something like, “some hard core biatches train here.” So walking in to a front row seat provoked a giddy giggle.

The stage was set with a small dressing table and brightly coloured chair. The tunes started pumping and the visuals rolling and right from the beginning we were entertained. I expected a hoopalicious spin up but what we got was so much more. Dazzling entertainment from beginning to end. A journey through Marawa’s inspiration stream of female energy and a delicious smorgasbord of her powerfully seductive skills. Dizzying heights, dangerous sharpness, costumes to drool over, the most divine roller skates on the planet and the most superbly outrageous locks. Giggle worthy, glam fun! Worth watching again and again.

I take a little something from each show I go to. Marawa’s Exotica was a reminder to keep in touch with the fabulous, feminine, quirky and rock star qualities that create powerfully unique shows and character.

Fabulous sums it up!

Fringe Festival Must See Moments

The Melbourne Fringe Festival is taking over in the most delightful way. The city is in a whirl and it is near on impossible to miss anything.

Booked in so far…

Lady Ha Ha Goes to Rehab

A depressed and jaded artist overwhelmed by the forces of the modern world is battling addictions; he goes to ‘Rehab’. He survives this experience with a fantasy-illusion that Lady Gaga is too, in ‘Rehab.’ A jaw dropping twisted tale of the processes of an unsettled mind and GAGA Cabaret Comedy.

Music Performed and Composed by Jorge Leiva

I Heart Jack

A story told in three parts, by three intriguing characters…

I Heart Jack is a surreal escapade through the events of one night – the night they all met. Retold, re-enacted and intricately woven together in a narrative combining circus feats, physical theatre, comedy, text and film.

Direct from the cabaret stages of Paris and London and following her critically acclaimed audience hit Big Shoes to Fill, Anna Lumb brings you a brand new solo work inspired by rock idols, Broadway legends and cult figures reimagined and reinterpreted.

Created and Performed by Anna Lumb

Directed by Maude and Anni Davey

Freefall

Freefall is an exciting exploration of bizarre and everyday fears, human quirks and truths.

‘Time and time again we were enthralled…Impressive, clever and very entertaining’ – Arts Hub

The artists combine traditional circus disciplines including hula hoop, juggling, adagio, hoop diving and acrobatic pitching with contemporary movement and physical theatre to develop a dynamic and innovative performance style.

Through spoken word and the unique physicality of each character, Freefall transcends the conventional concept of fear to show the deeper complexities and resulting everyday habits that fear evokes in us all defining how we act and who we are.

Winner of the 2010 Adelaide Fringe Award for Best Circus and the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Tour Ready Award as supported by Melbourne Fringe.
